Quilting Tips
- Cutting: Be Safe! Always cut away from yourself. Close Rotary Cutter after every cut. Its all about safety.
- Measure Twice and Cut Once. If several similar cuts are required use painters’ tape on back of ruler to expedite cutting and provide accuracy.
- Use quality thread. Invest in high quality low lint that which will help maintain a cleaner machine.
- Wind bobbins – have several bobbins on hand for quicker bobbin changes.
- Clean your bobbin casing and bobbin holder with every project. Great time to oil you machine as well. Clean machine = happy machine.
- Change your needle with every new project. Recommend 80\12 or 90/14 for machine quilting. This will prevent a magnitude of issues from occurring.
- Invest in a good quality seam ripper. We never want to admit that we need to undo our work but it sure is a lot easier with the proper ripper.
- Clean the bottom of your iron regularly Empty out old water to avoid rust build up. Follow your manufacturers guidelines for cleaning instructions.
- Pressure Foot: When you are not sewing, keep your presser foot in the down position. This takes the pressure off the spring that puts it up and down, and it will last longer.
- Don’t obsesses over errors – We all make errors, both technical and in our choice of fabrics, but our boo-boos nearly always lead to a better understanding of the quilting process. ‘Mistakes’ are really just learning experiences, so analyze them and tuck that knowledge away for the next project. Your skills will grow with every new quilt you sew.
