Precuts are pieces of fabric that have been cut to a specific size. This helps the quilter be able to get to the sewing process sooner. Precuts come in many different sizes and it seems each fabric company has chosen a different name to call them. Precuts come in 2-1/2” squares, 5” squares, 2-1/2” strip sets, 10” squares and panels to name a few. One of the benefits to precuts is that you can get a variety of different colors, textures and designs in one grouping.
- A fat quarter is a quarter yard cut that measures approximately 18” x 22”. It is a very convenient cut of fabric in comparison to a ¼ yard cut of fabric.
- You can cut larger pieces from a fat quarter.
- A ¼ yard cut of fabric is 9” x WOF (width of fabric). This means that the largest cut you can make is 9”. With a fat quarter you can cut pieces larger than 9” since it is 18” x 21”.
- There are many patterns and books that are “fat quarter friendly”.
- Many designers choose to make patterns from this specific cut of fabric.
A fabric panel is a single piece of fabric which is sold individually and not be the yard. They typically feature a large single motif or multiple motifs. Panels can be used in quilts as well as cutting up the individual motifs for placemats, pillows, potholders, etc. Panels that have a baby theme can be used to make a quick baby quilt by just adding a couple of borders on them to fit a crib. Panel sizes range from 23” x 44” to 44” x 44”.
Typically, fabric is 42” wide
